Proper Dining Etiquette
As the saying goes, "you are what you eat." However, it is equally important to consider how you eat. Dining etiquette is not just about following rules, but it is a way to show respect and appreciation to your host, the food, and the dining experience. Here are some tips on how to master proper dining etiquette:
Before the Meal
Before arriving at the dining table, make sure to clean your hands properly. Once you are seated, place the napkin on your lap and take note of the utensils. Work from the outside in as each course arrives. Take your cue from your host or the server on when to start eating. If there is a prayer or grace, bow your head and close your eyes in respect and wait for everyone to finish.
During the Meal
Chew with your mouth closed and avoid speaking when you have food in your mouth. Take small bites and pace yourself throughout the meal. Avoid using your phone or any electronic device during the meal. If you need to step away to attend to an emergency or phone call, excuse yourself politely. If you need to use the restroom or leave temporarily, place the napkin on your chair instead of on the table.
Engaging with Others
Make sure to engage with your fellow diners. Avoid talking with your mouth full of food. Use utensils you are comfortable with and refrain from slurping or making unnecessary noise when eating. If someone needs your attention or service, be polite and accommodating. Avoid being too critical or fussy with the food. Instead, find something positive to say about the meal and the dining experience.
After the Meal
When you have finished your meal, place your utensils neatly on the plate with the handles at the 4 o'clock position and the blades turned inwards. Fold the napkin and place it on the left side of the plate. Wait for everyone to finish their meal before excusing yourself from the table. If someone insists on paying for the meal, thank them and express your gratitude.
